Storm season is a time to be prepared, but the work doesn’t stop when the skies clear. Knowing what to do after a storm is just as important as preparing for it.
At the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, we remind all Californians that the moments after a disaster are critical. Our team works closely with local and regional partners to support communities affected by floods, heavy rain, high winds, and other storm-related impacts, helping residents recover safely.
So, what can you do to stay safe after a storm?
First and for most stay informed
- Make sure you are signed up for emergency alerts and listen to local authorities. Learn your evacuation routes, check for power outages in your area and when power is projected to be restored
- Before a storm strikes, visit our Storm Season Safety Blog for tips on preparing your home and family. Be sure to sign up for alerts through Ready.ca.gov to receive text, phone, or email notifications from your local government.
Check for Property and Neighborhood Damage
- After local authorities have deemed it safe, it’s a good idea to look around your property for any damage that needs to be fixed.
- Record and take photos of any damage.
- Never go near downed power lines, as high voltage wires may still be active. Report downed power lines to your local utility emergency center and the police.
- Be cautious of downed trees, it’s best to have a professional remove trees and limbs that have fallen on your home or are blocking access.
- In the event of heavy rainfall make sure your house is thoroughly dry to prevent mold growth. If flooding has occurred, assume your home needs to be treated for water and mold damage.
- If you suspect sewage contamination, take proper precautions to protect yourself and your family, including avoiding contact and disinfecting affected areas.
Gas Leak Safety Measures
- If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve, ventilate the area and leave immediately.
- Once you turn off the gas, do not turn it back on yourself. Wait for the gas utility company to check for leaks and have the company restore your service.
