State Agencies, Debris Removal Contractors Partner to Reinforce Safety


The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), CalRecycle, California Highway Patrol (CHP) and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) officials, along with contractors supporting the State’s Consolidated Debris Removal Program, met to discuss and emphasize operational safety today in Butte County.

As part of the ongoing safety focus, partner agency officials conducted an all-hands safety briefing at both debris removal contractor base camps. Since operations began, regular safety meetings have been conducted weekly. Today was another opportunity to meet and discuss driver and operational safety, the importance of staying vigilant throughout the recovery process and maintaining constant situational awareness while performing duties. Today’s safety meeting was the first where leadership from all the above mentioned partner agencies gathered at the same locations, where daily debris operations begin. Currently there are 154 debris removal crews clearing close to 100 parcels a day which keeps more than 1,000 trucks on the road daily in the Butte County area.

The State’s Consolidated Debris Removal Program has been underway across the State for several months with debris crews clearing qualified wildfire ash and debris from Butte, L.A. and Ventura counties after the devastating Camp, Hill and Woolsey fires impacted communities throughout those counties last November.
