Federal and State Partners Provide Update on Grand Princess Cruise Ship

Published:

OAKLAND – The United States Department of Health and Human Services and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services today announced the following update on the progress of the safe return of individuals from the Grand Princess Cruise ship. The following reflects the count as of 8:30 pm PDT on March 9:

  • The cruise ship has successfully navigated into the San Francisco Bay and docked at the Port of Oakland at approximately noon yesterday
  • Equipment has been moved into place to allow individuals to safely disembark
  • 407 total individuals were disembarked from the ship:
    • 173 U.S. residents
      • 149 transported via bus to Travis Air Force Base
      • 24 transported via ambulance
    • 234 Canadians
      • 232 transported for repatriation to Canada
      • 2 transported via ambulance

The first day of disembarkation focused on passengers with the greatest medical need (not necessarily related to COVID-19). Many of these passengers had limitations on their movement which required greater time and care while they de-boarded the vessel. With those individuals safely transported to places where they can receive care, the pace of disembarkation from the ship is expected to increase today.

The movement of passengers resumed today at 8 am PDT.

For more information on the health and safety measures being taken to protect first responders, the public and the surrounding community, please see yesterday’s announcement here.
