Overnight, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) secured two Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These grants help ensure the availability of vital resources to suppress the Slater Fire burning in Siskiyou County and the Bear Fire burning in Butte, Plumas and Yuba Counties.
The Bear Fire is threatening approximately 2,000 homes near the communities of Oroville, Feather Falls, Forbestown, LaPorte, Little Grass Valley, Strawberry Valley and Rackerby. At last report, the fire was 0% contained with extreme fire behavior and fire weather conditions. The fire has burned more than 50,000 acres.
The Slater Fire is threatening approximately 500 homes in the area of Happy Camp, of which most of these homes are primary residences. At last report, the fire is 0% contained and is also experiencing extreme fire behavior. The fire has burned more than 22,000 acres.
Cal OES Fire and Rescue and Regional emergency personnel are currently responding in concert with other federal, state and local agencies to address emergency management and mutual aid needs for the incident. The recent sustained high winds have made ideal environment for dangerous fire conditions throughout the region, and the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Red Flag Warnings across much of the state.
The federal Fire Management Assistance Grant, which is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund on cost-share basis, will assist local, state and tribal agencies responding to the fire to apply for 75-percent reimbursement of their eligible fire suppression costs.
