Winter Driving Safety Tips

Don’t let the winter storm that’s bringing high winds, rain, potential flooding and snow to Northern California, put a damper on your travel plans.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) encourages you to take steps to prepare before you head out on the road.

Check trusted weather forecasts to see what’s in store along your route. Visit Caltrans’ QuickMap for the latest conditions such as closures, detours and more. You can download the free QuickMap mobile app or check out the website at quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

Make sure you have an emergency kit in your car that includes jumper cables, flares or reflective triangles, ice scraper, car cell phone charger, blanket, map, food and water.

And use these safety tips to make sure you arrive safely.

Rain and Wind:

  • As a rule, don’t drive in water if you can’t see road markings. A vehicle can float in just one foot of water. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.
  • Reduce speedand allow extra space between vehicles.
  • Turn on headlights.
  • Make sure your windshield wipersare in good condition.
  • Keep an eye on high profile vehiclessuch as large trucks and buses during windy conditions.

Snow:

  • Allow enough time.Trips to the mountains can take longer during winter than other times of the year, especially if you encounter storm conditions or icy roads. Get an early start and allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
  • Keep your gas tank full.It may be necessary to change routes or turn back during a bad storm or you may be caught in a traffic delay.
  • When stalled, stay with your vehicle, and try to conserve fuel while maintaining warmth. Be alert to any possible vehicle exhaust problems.
  • Equipment operators must focus on snow removal. Refrain from, or use extreme caution, when passing snow removal equipment.
