In response to wildfires actively burning across California and into western Nevada, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has coordinated the opening of shelter locations in impacted counties. As part of the mass care and shelter disaster response function, Cal OES along with the California Department of Social Services and the American Red Cross jointly support local emergency agencies by providing temporary shelter for those who cannot safely remain in their homes due to a disaster or emergency.
There are currently six major wildfires/complexes burning in California. As of July 27, the Dixie Fire and Fly Fire merged in Butte and Plumas counties, burning more than 208,000 acres, while the Tamarack Fire has burned more than 68,000 acres in Alpine County.
