Extreme Heat Tips for Hiking

Temperatures throughout the state are expected to go up again. In anticipation of high temperatures throughout August, some officials have closed parks, for example, in San Diego County. Make sure to contact your state or local parks office to find out about closures near you.

Here are some tips to keep you safe if you’re planning to go hiking during the remaining summer months:

  • Take plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses
  • Take breaks in the shade, if possible
  • Take a fully charged mobile phone
  • Wear lose, lightweight clothing and sturdy shoes with traction
  • Follow all posted safety rules
  • Bring extra food, a flashlight, a first aid kit, a multi-purpose tool, and a whistle
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
