Governor Gavin Newsom and Director Nancy Ward today expressed heartfelt condolences and support for the members of the California/FEMA Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Task Force 8 (CA TF-8) injured while en route to support rescue efforts to Hurricane Helene earlier today. The firefighters are currently receiving medical care.

“Jennifer and I want to personally extend our deepest condolences to our injured firefighters and their families during this challenging time. Their bravery and selflessness are a testament to the extraordinary commitment they have to protecting all Americans. We are incredibly proud of them and will do everything in our power to support them through their recovery.”

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is working closely with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the San Diego Fire Department as the task force host agency, to ensure that the firefighters receive the best care possible. California has also extended its full support to the families of the injured firefighters.

“Their unwavering courage and dedication to protecting lives do not go unnoticed, and we are profoundly grateful for their sacrifice.” Cal OES Director Nancy Ward said. “In the meantime, our thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and we are reminded of the risks our first responders face every day to keep our communities safe.”

To support emergency response efforts to Hurricane Helene, Governor Newsom last week deployed firefighters and support personnel from California/FEMA US&R Task Force 5, 6, and 8 from the Orange County Fire Authority, Riverside Fire Department, and San Diego Fire Department. The deployment also included California Swiftwater Task Force 1 from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
