Cal OES Hosts Applicants’ Briefings for Government Entities Seeking January Firestorm Financial Assistance

Published:

Cal OES will host a series of Public Assistance Applicants’ Briefings beginning Monday, February 24, to help potential applicants navigate requirements. The Public Assistance program provides financial assistance to government entities to help repair, replace or restore damaged public infrastructure and facilities, following a federally declared disaster or emergency. Private non-profits and special districts, including school and community college districts, can also apply.

The President declared a major disaster on January 8, 2025, making federal disaster aid available to Los Angeles County following the January firestorm. The funding, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), covers 100 percent of emergency work, which includes specific categories of debris removal, emergency response and protective measures for 180 days. That timeframe has not yet been determined. The federal funds cover 75 percent of the costs for permanent work, such as roads and bridges, water control facilities, building and equipment capacity, utilities, and parks and recreational facilities that fall under certain categories.
