Cal OES Expands Prepositioning of Resources as Atmospheric River Continues into Northern California

Published:

As an atmospheric river continues to move into Northern California, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is expanding resource prepositioning efforts to threatened areas across the North. The decision comes after updated weather reports indicate a broader impact area for potential debris flow threats.

The National Weather Service forecasts multiple rounds of widespread rain and mountain snow at 4500′ to 5500′ feet over the weekend. Flood advisories and warnings have been issued in various Northern California regions which are in effect through Saturday, November 23.

“We’re now deploying additional resources to counties increasingly likely to experience severe weather or mud and debris flow concerns,” said Cal OES Fire Chief Brian Marshall. “This is part of our commitment to staying ahead of impacts and keeping Californians safe.”

Seven Counties Receiving Prepositioned Resources

Additional strike teams including 26 fire engines, 9 incident managers, a dispatcher, an urban search and rescue company and other resources are being stationed in seven counties including Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Napa, Butte, Colusa, and Glenn. These areas have been flagged due to their vulnerability to either heavy rainfall, proximity to burn scars, or heightened fire weather conditions.

Public Safety Remains Priority

Residents in the affected counties are urged to stay informed and listen to local authorities about actions they should take including evacuation orders or safety recommendations. In burn scar areas, officials recommend preparing for possible sudden debris flows by having your go-bag packed and knowing evacuation routes out of your home and neighborhood.
