Cal OES Awards Grants to Local Organizations to Protect Vulnerable Communities from Disasters

Funding will increase disaster preparedness in communities throughout the state

Sacramento, CA – As part of California’s nation-leading effort to build resilience among vulnerable populations including individuals with low incomes, disabilities, language barriers, older adults, and those residing in high-risk disaster areas, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), today announced grant awards to 31 community partners through Listos California.

This is the fifth year Cal OES has provided local funding through the Listos California campaign. Designed to enhance disaster preparedness through a statewide network of community-based organizations, Tribal Governments, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) and other partners to support the state’s most vulnerable populations when disaster strikes.

This grant helps people prepare for disasters like wildfires, extreme heat, drought, flooding and landslides. Listos California has provided bilingual agents for disaster helplines and trained community emergency response team volunteers.

“These grants are intended to help vulnerable communities who are often disproportionally impacted by natural disaster,” said Cal OES Director Nancy Ward. “The Listos California campaign allows us to build readiness and protect lives by investing in the areas where it is needed the most.”

Since 2019, Listos California has reached millions of Californians who otherwise would not have access to life-saving emergency preparedness information to respond to and recover from natural disasters.

Listos California, in cooperation with local governments, has contacted nearly 6 million Californians through phone banking efforts to encourage sign-ups to emergency alert systems. 327 community-based organizations have achieved nearly 15 million engagements with the most vulnerable Californians.

To ensure cohesion throughout the network of campaign partners and provides 1,983 culturally competent, in-language resources. Cal OES has also awarded the non-profit Valley Vision, Inc. a communications campaign and technical assistance grant.
