The 30th edition of the Summer Olympic Games will kick off with opening ceremony this week in Paris, and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has been working with the organizing committee, sharing information regarding their security strategy plan.
The 2028 Olympic Games will take place in the City of Los Angeles, so the Cal OES Homeland Security Division needs to learn more from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games security and strategy plan.
“As the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris approaches and anticipation builds for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) seized a valuable opportunity to engage with Mr. Julien Marion, Director General of Civil Security and Disaster Management (DGSCGC), and a delegation from France in February,” said Tom Osborne, former Cal OES Deputy Director of Homeland Security. “This meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between Cal OES and DGSCGC since 2019, aimed at exchanging best practices and fostering bilateral cooperation.”
During this meeting, Cal OES Director Nancy Ward, and Director General Julien Marion, focused on safety measures for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Marion provided valuable insights into the safety and security protocols implemented in preparation for the games.
The Cal OES Cyber Threat Intelligence team discussed strategies to mitigate risks associated with artificial intelligence, emphasizing the proactive approach taken in readiness for large-scale events such as the Olympics.
This ongoing partnership with the DGSCGC team is invaluable as California prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games and the 2026 North American FIFA World Cup, which will include matches in Los Angeles.
Also, since the Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, hot weather and wildfires could be a threat. So, the organizing committee shared information and strategies with the Cal OES Fire and Rescue Branch to put in place an alternate plan with more volunteers from France and from other neighboring nations, to be ready to fight and contain the fire.
