August is Emergency Management Awareness Month

Published:

In emergency management, saving lives and protecting property begins before disaster strikes.

Emergency managers help communities learn how to lessen the impact of a disaster and bounce back. They plan, prepare and respond to man-made and natural crises, carry out recovery and routinely conduct exercises to look for areas of improvement.

August is Emergency Management Awareness Month. This inaugural observance seeks to highlight emergency managers and their work. As the state’s leadership hub during all major disasters, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services acknowledges our emergency management professionals and emergency managers in local jurisdictions statewide.

Here’s a sample of what Cal OES does:

  • Respond, direct and coordinate state and federal resources and mutual aid.
  • Support local jurisdictions by assisting with the immediate response to an emergency, and stay engaged through long-term recovery.
  • Serve as the state’s overall coordinator and agent to secure federal resources.
