As Wildfires Burn Statewide, Cal OES Encourages all Californians to be Prepared

Published:

California is no stranger to disasters of all kinds, including major wildfires. As we enter peak wildfire season, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), encourages all Californians to take steps to prepare for the next wildfire.

Taking steps now to get prepared and helping your friends and loved ones prepare can help reduce the stress caused by an emergency.

WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS TIPS

We all have an important role to play when it comes to being prepared for emergencies of all types. It’s important to communicate with your family about what to do during an emergency.

SIGN UP FOR ALERTS

Signing up for alerts in the counties you work and live in can help ensure you get important information during an emergency. Sign up for alerts at ready.ca.gov

MAKE A PLAN

Talk with your family and loved ones about an emergency plan. Discuss where you’ll meet up if you can’t go home. Ensure all family members know additional ways to contact each other if cell phone service isn’t available.

BUILD A GO BAG

  • Non-perishable food and bottled water
  • Cash
  • Cell phone charger
  • Medications
  • Important documents
  • First aid kit
  • Pet supplies
    • Food/Water
    • Collar/Leash
    • Carrier
    • Vaccine information

After building your go-bag, keep it in a place that’s easy to remember in case you need to evacuate your home quickly. Maintain your go-bag by replacing expired items and re-think your needs every year and update your kit as needed.

LEARN EVACUATION ROUTES

Learn more than one evacuation route out of your neighborhood. Streets can get clogged during an emergency so it’s important to know a second route to safety.

HELP OTHERS

Get together with friends and neighbors to ensure they’re ready for the next wildfire. Talk about their plans and help out during an emergency, if possible.
