Hurricane Hilary is forecast to reach California this weekend, bringing high winds, heavy rain and strong ocean currents.

Cal OES reminds southern California residents that The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Surf Advisory reminding beachgoers to stay out of the ocean this weekend.
A high surf advisory warns coastal communities and beachgoers that large ocean waves and dangerous swimming and surf conditions are expected.
When:
The advisory is effective through 10 p.m. on Sunday, August 20. Californians and visitors should not visit the beach and ocean in affected areas during this time.
Where:
Advisory areas include the coast of Los Angeles and south through San Diego to the border.
Hurricane Hilary will create strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents, making the ocean extremely dangerous. Coastal erosion is also possible for vulnerable locations, so be aware near cliffs and other erosion sites. Larger set waves may impact harbors. Flash floods from ocean surge are unlikely, but still possible.
Ocean Safety Tips
- When in doubt, don’t go in.
- Keep children within easy reach.
- Be aware of changing tides and weather conditions.
- Watch for unexpected large waves.
- Be aware of floating debris.
Rip currents are the number one risk at most beaches. If caught in a rip current:
- Stay calm, don’t fight the current.
- Swim out of the current parallel to the shore. Once out of the current, swim back to shore.
- If you can’t escape, float or tread water.
- Call or wave for assistance.

La advertencia estará en efecto hasta el domingo 20 de agosto a las 10 pm y cubre la costa de Los Ángeles y San Diego
